Dendrobium tetragonum

Eastern Australia, occuring from the Fitzroy River in central eastern Queensland to the Illawarra district of New South Wales at altitudes ranging from sea level to about 1000 m. It grows on paperbark trees near or in swamps and is commonly known as the 'spider orchid' because of the shape of its flowers. Flowering occurs during spring. Flowers are cream to greenish, the margins with a reddish band, the white or cream labellum with reddish spots, and are carried on an axillary raceme.

Dendrobium thyrsiflorum

Assam to Hainan and Indo-China. A cool growing species prefering a dry winter rest and good light to initiate flowering. Up to 40 beautifully scented flowers are borne on 30cm spikes in March. After flowering new growths begin, now is the time to begin watering, gradually increasing though the summer.

Dendrobium topaziacum

This name is a synonym for Dendrobium bullenianum distributed in the Philippines. A Pedilonum section Dendrobe, with bottle brush type clusters of orange flowers, labellum striped red, borne along the leafless canes. Dendrobium topaziacum is a very colourful species, a large robust grower, and is very tolerant of growing conditions. Best grown in a small pot or basket with a media that stays damp but not wet and ample water and fertiliser when in active growth will produce long canes. Maximum sunlight short of leaf burn encourages full flowering.

Dendrochilum filiforme

This unusual little orchid is a native of the Philippines where it grows as an epiphyte. Its common name is the Golden Chain Orchid, it produces a fountain of yellow pendant inflorescenses with tiny flowers. It requires good light year round and even moisture. The flowering season is mid-summer. The pseudobulbs are very small and thin, less than 3cm tall, with slender leaves that may reach 12cm tall. The flower stems are reminiscent of grass stems and rise from the top of the developing pseudobulbs. They will sometimes reach 20cm above the plant before turning down where the first flowers begin. The bright yellow and highly fragrant flowers grow in two rows on the stem and can last for 6 weeks.

Encyclia green hornet
